BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/bcr-2014208083 DESCRIPTION A 10-year-old boy presented with a 1-day history of recurrent vomiting and intermittent lower abdominal pain. Examination revealed lower abdominal tenderness. Inflammatory markers were normal with a negative urine dipstick. The initial working diagnosis was gastroenteritis and supportive treatment was started. However, the child’s pain worsened and he developed rebound tenderness and guarding. Abdominal ultrasound findings were suggestive of appendicitis. Anteroposterior and lateral abdominal radiographs revealed a radio-opaque, ‘beaded’ foreign body (figure 1). Surgical exploration revealed a macroscopically normal appendix that was resected. The foreign body was found to be 16 separate magnets from a Magnicube puzzle (figure 2A). Magnetic attraction through the bowel wall resulted in multiple perforations, seven fistulae and further areas of pressure necrosis (figure 2B). Four perforations were sutured following removal of magnets and a 10 cm segment of ileum containing three fistulae was resected and an end-to-end anastomosis performed. A 2-week postoperative hospital stay was complicated by ileus and wound infection. The incidence of magnet ingestion is estimated to be 3.06 cases per 100 000 children per year. This figure has increased fivefold over the last decade largely due to the increasing popularity of magnetic toys. 2 Despite case and press reports detailing similar cases, there is poor public awareness and insufficient warnings on product packaging of the rare but potentially fatal consequences of magnet ingestion. This case highlights the high index of suspicion needed to correctly identify this rare cause of an acute abdomen in children.

Troubling Toys: Rare-Earth Magnet Ingestion in Children Causing Bowel Perforations

Ingestion of foreign bodies in the pediatric population is common and magnet ingestion is known to cause a significant morbidity. Rare-earth magnets are small 3-6 mm diameter spherical powerful magnets that are sold as popular desk toys for adults and were previously found in construction toys in attractive colors for children to play with. We describe 2 young healthy children who ingested rare...

Save the Children from Gastric and Intestinal Perforation Secondary to Small Magnet Ingestion by Educating Families with the Help of Pediatricians

The ingestion of foreign bodies is a comprehensive problem affecting the pediatric population, especially under 5 years of age.  The ingestion of 2 or more magnets may lead to their attraction over planes of intervening soft tissue with enough force to cause significant complications including obstruction, fistula formation or even perforation. This case series report have documented the cases o...

Accidental ingestion of magnetic spheres in children.

Magnetic foreign body ingestion can have a very serious sequale if multiple or combined with another metal object inside the abdomen. We report 2 cases of ingestion of rare-earth magnets with a very different consequences. This adds to the world's literature on this topic.

Magnetic foreign body ingestion in pediatric patients: report of three cases

BACKGROUND Although foreign bodies (FBs) typically pass spontaneously and uneventfully through the digestive tract, a subset of such bodies may become trapped, eventually leading to significant injury. In particular, the ingestion of magnetic materials can cause serious morbidity due to proximate attraction through the intestinal wall. CASE PRESENTATION We recently treated three pediatric pat...

Singing magnets ingestion: a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in children.

Foreign body ingestion is a common problem in children. Ingested foreign bodies include coins, needles, pins and button batteries. Ingestion of multiple magnets is very rare and poses a unique hazard of intestinal obstruction in children. The ingested magnets may reside in different loops of intestine and attract each other causing necrosis of the intervening wall of intestine. We present the c...
